NMM does have a feature that will allow you to see if your mods have been updated as long as you hit the "track" button on the mods description page. You want to make sure that you get the most up-to-date version of your mods. Understand that there might be mods that no longer work, crash to desktop, because the program got updated. As Cryzeteur says it is a safe way to go but honestly, I have never done this and I have yet to experence a major with my save file after an update. However, that issue seems to have been resloved. There was an early issue with NMM and 1.5 and the 2 not talking very well with each other.
